Sarcasm - A Double-Edged Sword
One very powerful tool you can use as you play with using humor is sarcasm, but you have to be careful with how you use it.
Sarcasm is kind of like a doctor’s scalpel, it’s a razor sharp tool that should be used with extreme skill and precision. If you slip when you’re using it, you could end up slicing yourself or the person you’re using it on.
You shouldn’t just play around with sarcasm…it has the capacity to go awry pretty easily, making you come off as a jerk or actually hurting someone’s feelings. Sarcasm is best used when you’ve already got your manner down enough to the point that your tone and delivery make it fairly clear that you’re not entirely serious.
Sarcasm is really best suited for those with comedic styles where they’re fairly quiet, generally serious. Coming out of nowhere with a casual, off-hand quip using sarcasm can go quite well for a person who’s basically more quiet and solemn.
So as with any comedic techniques you plan on trying, I advise you to test out your use of sarcasm against your close friends, people who know you already. This will help you to refine your skills before anything is really on the line.
